Farewell gift for Eric
A coworker of mine is leaving for a new opportunity. He’s an exceptional resource and I wish him well with his new position. I wanted to make him a pen as a farewell gift. As an avid sports fan he wanted a pen colored for his favorite team. and when I asked him what colors he’s like he immediately said blue and yellow. he also sent me the following picture of the L.A. Rams uniforms as reference.
Using the reference photo, I chose the following colors. I think the yellow is pretty spot on but I knew I’d have to mix the blue to match so I chose two mica powders and a dye.
The resin pour went well and I ended up with this. I think it turned out exceptionally well. The blue looks a little light, but it looks really good under natural light. The mica powder has a nice depth to it.
Once again I was too excited to be turning and didn’t actually remember to take any photos during the turning process. The turning and finishing went fairly well. I had to buff it for ages to get a particularly bad tool mark out that i’d missed during sanding (I’m really working on my sanding technique) but overall it turned out nicely.
The recipient was very excited about the pen, and even more so after writing with it. He’s going to take it with him to a training camp event and try to get the team’s signatures with the pen. I couldn’t imagine a better compliment. I wish him well and hope this pen serves him well on his journey.
